About Taller de Arquitectura X

Taller de Arquitectura X, known as TAX, is the office founded in 1981 by Alberto Kalach in Mexico City. For more than four decades its work has ranged from chapels and houses to large-scale urban plans, organised around explorations of naves, dwellings, gardens, towers and roofs.

Its most emblematic work is the Vasconcelos Library, opened in 2006 after winning an international competition together with Juan Palomar, Gustavo Lipkau and Tonatiuh Martínez. The building combines a large public library with a botanical garden in a 250-metre steel, concrete and glass structure surrounded by greenery and water.

Other notable works include Torre 41 facing Chapultepec Park, Torre Reforma 27 and Hotel Terrestre in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, where sustainability and local materials replace dependence on air conditioning. Kalach’s practice stands out for its sensitivity to setting, natural light and open space.
