About Fernanda Canales

Fernanda Canales is a Mexican architect, designer, critic and curator born in Mexico City in 1974, trained at Universidad Iberoamericana and holding a doctorate from Madrid’s School of Architecture. Her practice combines built work with research and teaching, and she has taken part in the Rotterdam, São Paulo and Venice biennials.

Her built work covers collective housing, community centres and public facilities, with a particular interest in Mexico’s northern border and in shared ways of dwelling. Projects such as Casa Bruma, the Elena Garro Cultural Centre and, more recently, Casa 720° in Valle de Bravo and community sports centres show an architecture of clear geometries and austere materials in service of everyday life.

Beyond building, Canales has authored books on collective housing and Mexican architecture and has been named an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. Her work reads as an ongoing reflection on how architecture can make cities more liveable and more fair.
